Despite the program’s name, image resizing does not seem to be the FastStone Photo Resizer’s main feature. Specialized in batch image conversion and renaming, resizing is another of the various advanced options that you can select when converting a batch of images between formats. This free program includes also some basic editing features and an excellent image viewer.
The program opens in a clear interface with two main tabs, one to convert images in batches and another one to batch-rename as many image files as you wish. The conversion tab also includes many renaming capabilities, which might make the second tab redundant in some cases – all you need to do is match the input and output formats in the conversion process.
One of the most impressive things about this free tool is the amount of different image file formats it supports on the input side – nearly all known type files are on the list, from the most common ones (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or BMP) to others you won’t come across with very often, such as JFIF, FAX, CUR, or J2K. As for the output, the list is much shorter, but it includes all the usual formats, PDF included.
You can add individual files and entire folders to the conversion list, and even click on the “Add all” button to move to the conversion panel all files in the active directory. You can then select various options that the program will perform simultaneously in one single operation.
When choosing the desired output format, the software will offer you some settings exclusive to each image file type for you to customize the output further. You can then add some advanced conversion settings, which include resizing and cropping the images selected, applying some color effects to them, or adding watermarks, text, and frames to enhance their final appearance.
As for the program’s rename capabilities, the program comes with a small set of templates to which you can add your own if needed. It also comes with features to number your files sequentially, to change the case of the file names, and to keep or remove the original date and time attributes of the output files. The possibilities are endless. You’re advised to make use of the program excellent conversion and renaming preview options before performing any changes, as the program cannot offer you the option to undo any of the changes performed once you’ve clicked on the Convert or Rename buttons.
FastStone Photo Resizer is provided as freeware as long as it is for personal or educational use. Only if you intend to make any commercial gain with it, you’ll be asked to purchase a license for an affordable fee.
